About the Event
Returning to open our 19th season after a riveting concert last year, giving performances that are “lithe, persuasive” (The New York Times), “eloquent and enthralling” (The Boston Globe), and described as “the most compelling American group to come on the scene” (The New Yorker), the Horszowski Trio presents a fascinating program, including Haydn’s delightful Piano Trio Opus 57/2 together with National Medal of Arts, Pulitzer Prize, and Grammy Award-winner American Composer William Bolcom’s “Haydn go Seek,” a response to Haydn’s music, which surprises and delights. “My aim in this music was to play a constant game of surprise throughout, in as Haydnesque a manner as I could muster from two centuries remove," explains Bolcom.
While the Haydn and Bolcom search for new rhythmic thrills, the Little Pieces by Schoenberg seem to search for new harmonic and expressive paths at the height of Romanticism. Composed in a single day, these Schoenberg pieces, brought to light in Aizawa’s colorful arrangement, are concise and enigmatic, like a haiku, barely lasting five minutes. The program ends with the second and last piano trio by Mendelssohn, a 30-minute-long masterpiece full of early Romantic passion and lyricism.
