About the World Premier on April 19 & 26, 2009

“Three Sonnets” for soprano, clarinet and piano is written on Petrarch's verse, which I feel is so lyrical that adding music to it comes naturally. The clarinet represents the voice of Petrarch, while the soprano is a representation of Laura, the woman for whom Petrarch composed the sonnets. The clarinet often echoes the soprano line, mirroring Petrarch's distant longing for Laura.

For me, composing is a social job and the most important part about it is having my new compositions performed. It is difficult to get commissioned in a classical concert series, so I am really excited about this commission from Treetops CMS. Premieres are tricky because the audience never knows what to expect. I like to talk to the audience to explain the new music and put anyone who has doubts at ease.

— Cristina Spinei

“Three Sonnets” features Soprano Gwendolyn Hillman:

"Gwendolyn Hillman sings with warmth, strength and gracefulness. Hers is a voice that truly matters, and deserves international attention.”
